Copeland

Copeland spent a second night in a row with Jude’s body curled around his. There hadn’t been any of the previous night’s foreplay, but Cope hadn’t minded that one bit. They’d wound up in the same bed watching SportsCenter and the next thing Cope knew Jude was wrapping himself around him and whispering goodnight.

This morning had started off with a sweet kiss from his partner before they’d gone their separate ways for a shower. He’d had no choice but to take matters into his own hands once he’d gotten naked. Cope had bitten his lip when he came. It was either that or shout the house down and alert Jude to what he was doing in the shower. Although he had little doubt Jude was doing the same thing in his own bathroom.

Now, they were rested, fueled up, and walking down Skerry Street toward Xavier’s duplex. Cope had butterflies rioting in his stomach. It wasn’t that he was nervous about the house and the spirits that were attached to it, he was worried about ringing the doorbells of strangers. In all of his years of being a working psychic and witch, people had come to him. This was the first time he was going door-to-door looking for something. It was more Jude’s thing and he was really hoping his partner would step to the front and lead this part of the investigation.

“Jesus, Cope. I can feel you fretting from here.” Jude turned to his partner with a worried look on his face.

“I’m not fretting.” Cope rolled his eyes. He was so fretting.

“What the hell would you call it then? Agonizing? Fussing? Carping?” Jude grinned broadly.

“Who the hell are you, Merriam Webster?” Cope wasn’t exactly keen on this jovial version of Jude. He preferred the grumpier version of the former P.I.

“I’d ask if you woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning, but since you woke up in my bed, I know that can’t possibly be what’s wrong with you.” Jude was still grinning.

“Oh, so since you’ve got me in your clutches you’re all cock-of-the-walk now?” That sounded way bitchier than he’d intended.

Jude stopped in the middle of the sidewalk. He reached out for Cope, pulling him to a stop. “You’re not in my clutches, Cope. I’m happy. We’re in a good place in this partnership and we’ve got an interesting idea for a lead. The kids and Xavier are safe too. I know knocking on doors isn’t exactly your thing, but you’ll use that southern charm once I do the heavy lifting. Is that all that’s bothering you or do you think you’re feeling off because we’re so close to the house?”

Was his bitchy mood courtesy of the damned house? “I’m fine. Let’s just get this over with.” He’d ferret out the real truth later.

“How about we stock up on ice cream and go back to marathoning Jeopardy tonight?” Jude grinned before he rang the doorbell of the apartment next door to Xavier’s.

Cope nodded. Ice cream sounded good to him.
